The OSES Good Practices Handbook is Here!

How can we preserve the ocean amidst the environmental crisis? The OSES project (Ocean Sustainability Through Education and Sports) tackles this crucial question with a guide to best practices. Featuring contributions from 25 players in the sporting, academic, and marine sectors, the OSES Good Practices Handbook is a must-read for anyone passionate about ocean conservation.

This guide was born from a desire to raise awareness among young generations and inspire action against ocean degradation. Water sports practitioners are among the first affected by climate change and the degradation of aquatic ecosystems. We hope this handbook helps them understand how they can protect the waters and why they deserve clean waters teeming with life.

Dominika Wojcieszek (EMSEA), Idoia Fuertes (Surfrider España), and Begoña Vendrell Simón (Barcelona University) led the creation of this guide as main authors and partners of the European OSES project. The guide compiles 25 initiatives from 17 countries, aiming to promote ocean protection education and raise environmental awareness through sports—a key goal of the OSES project.

The handbook offers practical examples to inspire sports organizations, schools, environmental NGOs, museums, and aquariums to develop activities and approaches that protect the environment. It enhances our understanding of oceans through sports, shows how we can preserve biodiversity, reduce environmental footprints, combat pollution, and encourage reflection on our impact and lifestyle through six themes:
