Mark’s passion for marine science began as a small child when he collected seashells when on family holidays. He is a Marine Biology graduate from the University of Liverpool, where he also completed a PhD researching the ecology of sub-tidal bryozoans.  

He has been an environmental science teacher in the UK for nearly 30 years, for most of his career working for the Field Studies Council at coastal field centres and latterly as their national project officer overseeing school biology and higher education programmes. Whilst with the FSC Mark helped develop innovative approaches to delivering Ocean Literacy on field courses, including the use of IT in the field, as well as working with the Marine Biological Association to develop residential marine science camps for young people. He has co-authored several rocky shore  ID guides as well as several papers and publications on Ocean Literacy in UK curriculum-led field courses 

He is currently working for  the Somerset Wildlife Trust managing a 3 year grant funded project called ‘Somerset’s Brilliant Coast’ which aims to better engage schools and local communities with their coastal habitats and environments.
